      The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor will line the scenic trail at Castaways Park with 1,776 American flags this coming weekend in honor of military veterans. They are calling it the “Field of Honor,” and it is one of 16 similar efforts that will be sponsored by Exchange Clubs nationwide this year. This is the second year they have set up this display. As members of the Exchange Club have said, “It’s not pro-war, or anti-war, it’s strictly to honor our service men and women.”
        Being that our U.S. History classes have just finished learning about the Vietnam War, I thought that this would be something great for you to see and experience. And we are coming up on Memorial Day which is a National Holiday honoring those who have fallen in the line of duty. I am offering 10 points of extra credit for you to go out and see this awesome display at the park located at Dover Drive and Castaways Lane.
         In addition to the display of flags they have several other special events, including the Dedication Ceremony that will take place on Saturday, 5/19 from noon to 1pm featuring Keynote Speaker, Bob Friend, World War II Tuskegee Airman. For more information check out this link.
         To get the extra credit please have someone take a picture of you near the statue (as seen in the photo below) on the bluffs with all the flags around. You may have the photo taken showing any direction that includes flags. This must be done today Friday, May 18th through Sunday, May 20th between 9am and sundown. The picture may be taken with a regular camera or cell phone, etc...do not bring a print out of the picture you will simply e-mail it to kkirby@nmusd.us to receive the extra credit points (you can send the photo from your phone as a text message to my email if that is easier for you).

Hello 2009!  I hope that you all enjoyed the break! Well here we are just a few weeks away from the end of the semester...be sure to stay on top of your work before finals!   US= Your extra credit assignment is due Wednesday, 1/7 (for odd periods) & Thursday, 1/8 (for even periods)...the assignment is posted on School Loop. Isn't that quote so fitting for our weather right now? Well one more week before our Spring Break and here is what we have going on: US= We are working on Chapter 14 dealing with the Civil Rights Movement. Don't forget that you have workbook pages 117, 119, & 121 due this week (Thursday for 6th period & Friday for 1st, 3rd, & 5th periods). Also on that day you will take a Quest (longer than a quiz, but shorter than a test) on chapter 14 & the Civil Rights Movement. In terms of your project...I have made a concession, you may turn it in on the original due date given & receive 10 extra credit points (these points will go toward you project & are therefore worth more than "normal" extra credit points due to how the grades are weighted) or you may turn it in on Monday, April 14th before the end of lunch to receive full credit. This week's schedule: Monday– A day Tuesday– B day Wednesday– Late Start A day Thursday– B day Friday– A day  (extended lunch) U.S. History=   The " profile " for your Historical Civil Rights Figure is due to be uploaded on you class's www.edmodo.com page by 11pm on 3/22 (no matter what period you are in). This Civil Rights Historybook project will move quickly and be done by 3/31 & 4/1, so be sure to look at what you need to be accomplishing in the other parts of the project.  Please bring your composition book to class (if you didn't turn it in with your World War II work).
