Enjoy the break!

I'm sure that you will all enjoy the time off. I hope that your holidays are happy & that you come back ready to go in 2009! Grades will not be updated right away. Check for updated grades on School Loop before you come back to class in 2009. US= No homework, but you have an opportunity to do the Can-O-Soup extra credit project that was handed out in class (due Wednesday, 1/7/09 for odd periods & Thursday, 1/8/09 for even periods). PacRim/IR= No homework, but you have an opportunity to do the Current Event extra credit project that was handed out in class (due Thursday, 1/8/09).

The last week of school for 2008... ***There will be an extra credit assignment given out to all classes over the holiday break otherwise there will NOT be any work that is due after the break. US= You have a test on Chapters 6 & 7 this week! Be sure to use the study guide given out in class to help prepare for the test (even as you work on finishing the homework packets that are due as well). The test is WEDNESDAY (for 2nd period), this is a change in the schedule that was announced in class on Monday (after the class was given a chance to vote); however homework packets for 2nd period are still due on Friday, 12/19. Homework packets are due Thursday, 12/18 for all of the odd periods, that is the same day you will be taking your test. Pa cRim/IR= Your Disease Quest (shorter than a test, but longer than a quiz) is on Wednesday, 12/17. The 3 major topics are Malaria, TB, & HIV/AIDS. Be sure to go over your notes & handouts in preparation for the Quest. Also be sure to brin

DON'T FORGET TO BRING IN ADOPT-A-FAMILY MONEY TO YOUR 3rd PERIOD CLASS! HELP A FAMILY IN NEED HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! US= We will finish up World War I this week & move into the 1920s. You will be given an extra credit opportunity to complete and return to class by Friday or Monday (depending on which period you are in)...many of you should take advantage of this! PacRim/IR= We will continue with our notes on Malaria and then move on to HIV/AIDS. Additionally we will be visited by one of the counselors this week to help each of you complete your 4-year plan for high school. You will be instructed to take this home, have a parent/guardian sign it, and bring it back to class for points . THIS IS NO LONGER THE ASSIGNMENT, SINCE THE COUNSELORS WILL BE MAILING THE FORMS HOME. Just for fun....extra credit if you can identify which highway this is!

Well December is here already & that means that before you know it the semester will be over! US= We are starting our new unit on Chapters 6 & 7. Your homework Packet assignments were given out prior to the Thanksgiving break & are due Thursday, 12/18 (odd periods) & Friday, 12/19 (even periods). If you have not yet done your Biography PowerPoint Project...do it now! It will be due this month (if you missed your due date you will only be given 1 make-up opportunity for partial credit this month...have it ready otherwise you get a zero for the project)! PacRim/IR= We too are starting a new unit. We will be looking at 3 major diseases that impact the world: malaria, tuberculosis, & HIV/AIDS. Don't forget that your partner project "Design an Awareness Campaign" is due Wednesday, 12/3 and you have a map test on the southern portion of Africa on Friday, 12/5. ***Be sure to complete your TB & Malaria worksheet for class on Friday! HAPPY THANKSGIVING! US= New homework packet assignments are being given out this week. They are due 12/18 & 12/19. No Tribal Cube Projects will be accepted after the break (they were due 11/21)! If you have not yet done your powerpoint ...do it now, it will be due in December or you already missed you deadline, but should still e-mail it to me at kkirby@nmusd.us !  PacRim /IR= Your "Design an Awareness Campaign" Project with a partner is due Wednesday, 12/3. Your next Map Test on Southern Africa is on Friday, 12/5. Expect to have a lot of papers passed back the Monday you return from break! Just for fun...yup, you do recognize those two guys doing tai -chi in the park with the old ladies...they were freshmen at the time, but are current juniors you have probably seen in my class room!

US= Your Chapter 4 & 5 Homework Packets are due Wednesday, 11/19 (for 1st, 3rd, & 5th periods) and Thursday, 11/20 (for 2nd period). Remember that you also have a test that day! The Tribal Cube Project is due on Friday, 11/21 no matter what period you are in; please keep in mind that this is the last project assignment you will have this semester for this class. PacRim/IR= We are continuing with our unit on Hunger & Poverty. You will get a new map assignment on Tuesday, it is due labeled and colored by Thursday. Just for fun...my niece & I have matching Vans.

We all have a day off on Tuesday in honor of Veterans Day. Far too often I think we all just get wrapped up in the idea that we have a day off, that we never take the time to appreciate why we have that day off. Please take a moment or two to stop and appreciate the day off and learn why we have Veterans Day by visiting the following sites: Information from the Department of Veterans Affairs , a brief timeline , and more Veterans Day info . US= You have a Chapter 4 Quiz in class this week...did you read the chapter yet? You should be working on your homework packet (due next week) as well as your Tribal Cube (also due next week). PacRim/IR= We will continue our look at Poverty & Hunger this week. You have a map test on the Northern(ish) Half of Africa on Friday...don't forget to study! Just for fun... Homecoming Dance 2008!

Here we are at November already...my that went quick! Quarter grades will be posted on-line by Thursday morning. US= We are working on Chapters 4 & 5 currently. Please be working on that homework packet (due 11/19 for odd periods & 11/20 for even periods). Expect that you will see a Chapter 4 Quiz either at the end of this week or at the start of next week! Keep up with the reading. All tribal cubes are due on Friday, November 21st (no matter what period you are in).  PacRim/IR= Your map of the Northern(ish) Half of Africa, labeled and colored, is due on Wednesday, 11/5. We are working on our new unit Poverty & Hunger. This week we will be looking at the links between the two topics. Check out this Water Buffalo...one of the African Big Five...do you know what the other four animals are that make up the Big Five?

This week marks the end of the first quarter! Extra credit write-ups that you have turned in will be added to your grades at the end of the week. US= Chapter 3 Homework Packets are due this week...Tuesday for odd periods and Wednesday for even periods. There will also be a chapter test that day! Please remember that it is your job to turn in absent work or make up a test ASAP by talking to me (before or after class), it is not my job to track you down! PacRim/IR= You have a Quest (longer than a quiz, shorter than a test) on the Human Rights Unit this Wednesday, October 29th. Be sure to study by going over your notes...from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to women's rights, to minority rights, to the specific cases we have looked at in class (both readings and documentaries)...they are all fair game for the Quest! We will finish up the documentary "Inside the Struggle: the Amy Biehl Story" in class then take a look at two more issues before the Quest...torture

Get logged on with School Loop to see your most current grade and upcoming assignment due dates! You can do this at  the school website . US=  We are continuing with chapter 3 this week...some of you have biography  powerpoints  due this week and you all have your Chapter 3 Homework Packets due next week (look to the left for exact due dates). Extra, Extra, Extra Credit Alert!!!

FOR ALL CLASSES: There are 2 extra credit opportunities next week check out the info below & take advantage!!! #1- You all have an extra credit opportunity next week (Tuesday, October 14 th ) by attending Peer Court after school in portable #9 from 3:15-5:15. To earn the extra credit (and even some community service hours) you must be there the entire time! To get the extra credit answer the following questions about each case (there will be a maximum of 4 cases): a- What was the case about? (i.e. what are they in trouble for doing?), b- What was the jury's decision & did the judge change anything?, and c- Did you agree or disagree with the outcome? Why? Additionally some of you will have the opportunity to be jurors and ask questions (if you end up being chosen for that please answer the above questions for your case only AND write about what the jury experience was like...hard, easy, confusing, etc.) This write up on Peer Court will be due 1 week after the event (Tuesda

You will be getting a new map assignment on Thursday that will be due on Monday 10/13.

GRADES WILL BE POSTED ON-LINE BY THE END OF THE WEEK. Homework Packets may not yet be included for the juniors. US= You have new homework packets due next week(given out last week)...be working on them! We are moving on to the topic of the Civil War...a lot happening be sure to keep up! PacRim/IR= We are looking at the different categories that fall under Human Rights & will be taking a look at some specific case studies this week & next. On Wednesday (10/1) you have your first Map Test on the 15 countries and 16 capitals from the Central America & the Caribbean Map...be sure to study!

9/22-9/26...it's Spirit Week folks! That means Battle of the Bay is this Friday night. Listen up to announcements at school for everything that is happening this week! US= Your Chapter 1 Homework Packet is due Wednesday (for odd periods) and Thursday (for even periods). We also have our first test that day! You will also receive your next homework packet assignment this week. use that Study Guide I gave you last week to prepare for the test! PacRim/IR= You had a map due today (Central America & the Caribbean). You will get that back next class and there will be a map test on the countries & capitals listed next Wednesday (10/1). We are starting our unit on Human Rights this week by taking a look at the history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the various categories of rights.

Here is what is happening in class the week of 9/15-9/19: US= Be working on your Homework Packet...it is due next week (9/24 or 9/25 depending on which period you are in). This week we will be looking at the creation of a government in the United States as well as the early presidents. PacRim/IR= Your homework due on Wednesday is to bring back your information on culture to share with your group so you can put your posters together. The focus this week is on Culture & the 5 Major World Religions. There will be a Quest (longer than a quiz, shorter than a test) on Friday, 9/19 covering what we have studying so far in Geography, Culture, & Religion.

Well folks, we now have one week of school under our belts, so it is time to get to the serious stuff...learning! (Please be sure to check back here for updates later in the week...plans sometimes change!) US= There is a Map Quiz on the States & Capitals on Friday, 9/12 for 1st, 3rd, & 5th periods and Monday, 9/15 for 2nd period. Don't forget to study! You were given your first homework packet assignment last week. Please be working on that, as it has multiple parts. The due date for 1st, 3rd, & 5th periods is Wednesday, September 24th and Thursday, September 25th for 2nd period. PacRim/IR= Be sure to have your binders with you in class on Tuesday since we will be doing some organizing with dividers. This week we will be continuing with our theme by looking at the 5 Themes of Geography. Your homework due on Thursday will be to complete the "My Culture" half-sheet by ranking your the importance & answering the 10 questions.

Welcome back to school! The first week is a little hectic, but this is what we have going on: US= Please get your syllabus signed & return it to class on Thursday (odd periods) or Friday (even periods). Remember to keep it in tact (don't cut it); it will remain in your binder. Also please bring your ID to check out your textbook. You will be introduced to your 1st project of the semester & a homework packet this week as well. Don't deny it...I know you're excited! PacRim /IR= Please get your syllabus signed & return it to class on Friday. We will be introducing our first unit on Geography on Friday as well.

Well folks, here we are at the close of yet another school year. This is what this week's schedule looks like: MONDAY- 1st (8:00-10:00) & 5 th (10:20-12:20) period finals TUESDAY- 2 nd (8:00-10:00) & 6 th (10:20-12:20) period finals WEDNESDAY- 3rd (8:00-10:00) & 7 th (10:20-12:20) period finals THURSDAY- 4 th (8:00-10:00) & 8 th (10:20-12:20) period finals A few things to keep in mind: 1. Study guides were provided in class last week. 2. You must be in class to take your final during the given time or make previous arrangements be e-mailing Miss Kirby at kkirby@nmusd.us . 3. Final grades for the semester will be posted on-line by Friday afternoon.

US= FILM NIGHT IS TUESDAY, JUNE 10TH from 6-8 pm. ALL STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ARE INVITED. We will meet outside of Beek Hall in the quad before watching the student's projects (a form explaining this event & textbook due dates was sent home last week). 6th period has a quiz on Monday on 19.2. Textbooks & workbook pages 155, 157, 160, & 162 are due Thursday (for 1st, 3rd, & 5th periods) and Friday (for 6th period). We will also have our final quiz that day on Chapter 19, sections 3 & 4. The rest of the class time this week will be devoted to reviewing. PacRim/IR= We will spend some more time this week looking at War & Conflict. A study outline will be provided this week. The first part of your Semester Final will be given this Friday, June 13th. It's not as scary as it sounds, but you still need to study! Glitter Word Generator
